IDENTIFYING COMMON POOL LEAK SYMPTOMS ON LONG ISLAND
Pools across Long Island face severe stress from sandy coastal substrate, high groundwater tables, and harsh winter freeze-thaw cycling. Early detection prevents soil erosion and structural undermining beneath the shell and deck.
The Threshold That Separates Evaporation From a Leak
Normal evaporation is up to a quarter inch per day. Anything beyond that warrants attention.
- Up to ¼ inch per day — normal evaporation under calm conditions
- ¼ to ½ inch per day — investigate further
- ½ to 1 inch per day — a leak is likely
- Over 1 inch per day — significant leak
Calculating what you are losing: surface area in square feet × inches lost × 0.62 = gallons per day.
A 16 × 32 pool (512 sq ft) losing a quarter inch beyond evaporation is roughly 79 gallons a day. A 20 × 40 pool (800 sq ft) with a two-inch differential is roughly 992 gallons a day. Across a twenty-week Long Island season, that adds up fast on both your water bill and the soil under your deck.
How to Run the Bucket Test Correctly
- Bring the pool to its normal operating level, about halfway up the skimmer opening, and switch off the autofill.
- Fill a five-gallon bucket with pool water to about an inch from the top. Set it on the first or second step so it sits without floating — weight it if needed.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket, then mark the pool level on the outside of the bucket.
- Leave it 24 hours with no swimming, no backwashing, and no water added.
- Compare. An equal drop is evaporation. A larger drop on the pool side indicates a leak.
- Repeat for a second 24 hours with the pump running. Greater loss with the pump on points to the pressure side, meaning return lines. Greater loss with the pump off points to the suction side or the shell itself.
Visual and Operational Symptoms
- Autofill running more often, or an unexplained jump in your water bill
- Soggy patches, moss growth, settling pavers, or an unusually green strip over a buried plumbing run
- Persistent air bubbles in the pump basket or at the return jets, indicating a suction-side break drawing air into the system
- Difficulty holding chlorine or water clarity from constant fresh-water dilution
- Water loss that continues in cool, humid, or overcast weather when evaporation should be minimal — one of the strongest indicators of a genuine leak
Structural and Material-Specific Vulnerabilities
Vinyl Liner Pools
Tears at step transitions, light niches, and skimmer gaskets. Liner float or subterranean water accumulating behind the vinyl. The cuts made at installation for steps, lights, skimmer, drains, and wall returns are the recurring failure points.
Concrete and Gunite Shells
Hairline cracking along the tile line, skimmer throat separation from ground heave, voids around wall penetrations, and failed hydrostatic relief valves.
The single most common leak location on a gunite pool is the skimmer, where the plastic skimmer body meets the concrete shell. That cold joint separates over time under soil movement and freeze-thaw cycling, which is exactly why Long Island pools see it more often than pools in year-round climates.
Professional Diagnostic Techniques
- Underwater dye testing — divers release fluorescein dye near suspected cracks, light niches, and fittings under static conditions to observe localized draw
- Pressure testing — pneumatic and hydrostatic isolation of feed and return plumbing to verify line integrity under pressure
- Line isolation — plugging the skimmer, returns, cleaner line, vacuum line, and main drain separates a plumbing leak from a leak in the shell
Long Island caution: many shorefront and low-lying Suffolk County properties sit on a high water table. A pool drained for repair can float out of the ground if hydrostatic pressure is not relieved first. Never drain a pool without checking groundwater conditions and confirming the hydrostatic relief valve is functional.
