Every body of water on Long Island dives differently. Here is what our crews plan for when we work Great South Bay, Fire Island Inlet, Carll's River and Santapogue Creek.
Shallow sand and silt across the bay, with soft mud in the creeks and dredged basins. Fire Island Inlet is a high-energy sand environment where the bottom actively moves.
Great South Bay has a small tidal range compared to the North Shore because the barrier island restricts exchange to a few inlets. The trade-off is that Fire Island Inlet itself runs hard current, and inlet-adjacent work has to be scheduled around it.
Typically one to four feet and heavily wind-driven. A sustained blow stirs the shallow bay bottom and can shut visibility down for a day or more afterward. Calm mornings are the best windows.
Heavy. Shallow, warm, protected bay water is an aggressive fouling environment, and South Shore boats generally accumulate faster than North Shore boats on the same schedule.
Sand movement near Fire Island Inlet is the standout local issue. Depths shift, and bulkhead and piling foundations near the inlet approaches sit in a bottom that does not stay put.
The bay is shallow, so wind reaches the bottom. A day or two of hard wind suspends fine sediment through the whole water column and it does not settle out quickly. We watch the forecast and schedule around it rather than showing up and hoping.
We work the inlet approaches and the Babylon side, with dive operations timed around the current. The inlet moves water hard and the sand bottom is actively shifting, so this is scheduled, planned work rather than drop-in work.
