Sand throughout, and actively moving. Fire Island is a barrier island whose entire geology is sediment in transit. Inlet and ocean-side bottom conditions change measurably season to season.
Fire Island Inlet runs hard. The bay side is comparatively gentle with the small Great South Bay tidal range, but anything near the inlet is a current-planned operation.
Bay side is typically one to four feet and wind-driven. Ocean side on a calm clean day can be substantially better, but ocean-side work is weather-gated in a way bay work is not.
Moderate on the bay side. Seasonal-use vessels and community dock infrastructure here often sit unattended for stretches, which changes the accumulation pattern compared to a regularly-run boat.
Access is the defining constraint. Fire Island communities are boat-access, and dive crews, gear and compressors all have to get there. We plan Fire Island work as scheduled trips rather than same-day calls, and we handle the logistics.
