Every body of water on Long Island dives differently. Here is what our crews plan for when we work Patchogue Bay, Great South Bay, the Patchogue River and Swan River.
Soft mud through the river and inner basins, sand and silt across Patchogue Bay. The river carries freshwater sediment that settles in the lower reaches and marina basins.
Small Great South Bay tidal range with modest current, though the Patchogue River outflow adds directional flow at the river mouth. Working conditions are generally calm relative to inlet and North Shore locations.
One to three feet is typical, less in the river. Freshwater input and fine bottom sediment both work against clarity here, and this is a location where we rely on lighting and close-work technique.
Heavy. Sheltered, warm, low-flow river and basin water grows a lot through a Long Island summer.
Freshwater and saltwater mixing at the river mouth creates a corrosion environment that is harder on metal than either alone. Zinc and anode inspection matters here.
Brackish water, marina stray current and mixed metals in a shared basin all accelerate anode consumption. If yours are going faster than you expect, that is worth investigating rather than just replacing, because it often points to a stray current issue somewhere in the basin.
Usually. The soft river bottom means items tend to settle into the mud rather than sit on top of it, so this is a probe-and-pattern search. Give us a location and a timeframe and we will work it methodically.
