Every body of water on Long Island dives differently. Here is what our crews plan for when we work Northport Bay, Northport Harbor, Duck Island Harbor and Centerport Bay.
Predominantly soft mud and silt through the harbor basins, firming to sand and cobble toward Duck Island and the bay mouth. Deep silt in the inner harbor means dropped items settle in and need probing rather than sight recovery.
Northport shares the large western Sound tidal range. The harbor drains substantially on a big low, and shallow-draft slips at the head of the harbor can go soft-bottom or nearly dry, which stresses dock structures through repeated loading cycles.
Two to four feet is typical inside the harbor. The soft silt bottom is easily stirred, so we work deliberately to avoid clouding out our own inspection.
Warm, sheltered, low-flow harbor water makes Northport a heavy fouling environment. Boats kept here through a full season generally show more accumulation than comparable boats on the open Sound.
The combination of soft bottom and large tidal range works pilings loose over time. Northport is a harbor where annual piling inspection genuinely pays for itself.
Sheltered harbors with limited flushing and warmer summer water column temperatures grow more, and faster. Northport Harbor checks all three boxes. Boats on the same bottom paint schedule will show noticeably heavier accumulation here than on an exposed Sound mooring.
