Port Jefferson runs a substantial tidal range and a strong current through the harbor mouth. The narrow entrance concentrates flow, which is why we time entrance-area work around slack water rather than fighting it.
Three to six feet is common in the main harbor, better than most western Sound harbors. It degrades in the inner arms and after heavy runoff.
Moderate to heavy through the season. Ferry traffic and working-waterfront activity keep the main harbor stirred, which affects both fouling patterns and inspection scheduling.
This is a deep, busy, heavily used harbor. Deep-draft vessels, ferry infrastructure and heavily loaded dock structures all sit in water that does not go slack often. Structural inspection here is an annual item, not an as-needed one.
