Firm sand and shell hash across much of the harbor with deeper mud in the basins. Shelter Island Sound is a swept, current-scoured environment in the channels.
Shelter Island Sound moves water hard through the passages around Greenport. This is one of the stronger current environments in our service area and dive operations are planned around slack windows.
Frequently the best on Long Island. Clean, high-salinity East End water on a good tide can give eight to fifteen feet, which makes for genuinely useful photographic and video documentation.
Moderate to heavy, with a different character than the western bays. High salinity supports strong hard growth, particularly on running gear and mooring tackle.
Greenport is a deep-water working harbor with a marine trades presence and heavy seasonal boat volume. Structures here are loaded harder and used more than in a purely recreational harbor.
Yes, meaningfully. Greenport and Shelter Island Sound carry clean high-salinity water and on a good tide the visibility is far better than the western bays. It shows in the documentation. Our East End inspection photos and video are consistently the clearest work we produce.
