Sand and gravel at the inlet and through the lower creek, soft mud in the upper creek and the inner basins. The inlet mouth is a shifting sand environment maintained by jetties.
Mattituck Inlet is the only harbor of refuge on the North Fork's Sound shoreline, and it concentrates the tidal exchange for the whole creek through one narrow opening. That means real current in the inlet throat and a manageable range inside.
Three to six feet in the creek on a flood, better than most South Shore locations. Sound water entering on the flood is comparatively clean.
Moderate. The creek is sheltered and warms in summer, but tidal exchange through the inlet provides reasonable flushing.
The inlet is a maintained navigational asset in a shifting sand environment. Shoaling is a persistent condition and depth changes between dredging cycles. Boats that run this inlet regularly benefit from running gear inspection after grounding-prone stretches.
Yes, and it is a common call here. Mattituck Inlet shoals between dredging cycles and a soft grounding does not always announce itself. We inspect keel, running gear, shafts, struts and rudders in the water and document what we find so you know whether you actually took damage.
Yes. We serve the full creek from the inlet in to the head, including the marina facilities and private docks along both shores.
Generally better visibility, cleaner water and moderate fouling compared to the shallow warm South Shore bays. It also means our inspections here tend to produce clearer photographic documentation.
