Sand and shell in the swept channels, soft mud in the protected harbors of Coecles and West Neck. The contrast between scoured channel bottom and quiet harbor mud is sharp here.
Strong current through the Shelter Island passages, notably around the ferry crossings and the narrows. Inside Coecles and West Neck the water is comparatively quiet. Two very different working environments within a short distance.
Among the best available locally. Eight to fifteen feet is realistic on clean water in the Sound. The inner harbors run lower, three to six feet, with softer bottom that clouds more readily.
Moderate to heavy in the quiet harbors, lighter in the swept channels where current works against settlement.
